Install the desktop recorder

The desktop recorder, Scalign Assistant, records your meetings from your own computer: Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams calls, and in-person meetings. It records audio only, never your screen. Setup takes a few minutes.

Before you start

• A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 13 Ventura or later, or a Windows 10 or 11 PC (64-bit).
• Your Scalign account.
• Rolling it out to a whole team? Your IT administrator can use the IT and MDM guide.

Download and install

1. In Scalign, go to Settings → Recording. Under Desktop recorder, click macOS or Windows.
2. Mac: open the downloaded file and drag Scalign Assistant into Applications. Open it from Applications; if it asks to be moved there, click Move to Applications, or updates won't install.
3. Windows: run Scalign-Assistant-Setup.exe, choose where to install it, and finish the installer.

Sign in

1. Open Scalign Assistant and click Sign in.
2. Sign in with your Scalign account in the window that opens. You come back to the app when you're done.

Allow the permissions (Mac)

The app asks for four macOS permissions, one screen at a time. For each one, click the button, switch Scalign Assistant on in System Settings if asked, and come back to the app.

1. Accessibility ("Detect when you're in a meeting"): lets the app notice when Zoom, Meet or Teams starts a call.
2. Full Disk Access ("Match meetings to your calendar"): lets it read Teams and Safari Google Meet meeting links, so recordings land on the right calendar event.
3. Microphone ("Record your voice"): click Allow Microphone.
4. System audio ("Record other participants"): click Allow Audio Recording.

When you see You're all set, click Open Scalign Assistant.

If your company manages your Mac, IT may already have approved Accessibility and Full Disk Access for you. You still allow Microphone and System audio yourself.

Turn on auto-record

Auto-record is off to start with: the app notices your meetings, but records only when you tell it to. To have it record every meeting it detects, switch on Auto-record on the app's Record page (the same setting as Record automatically under Settings → Recording in Scalign).

With auto-record off, a Meeting detected notification appears when a call starts. Click Start recording in it, or Record meeting in the app.

How you know it's recording

• The app window switches to a recording screen with a timer and a Stop recording button.
• On a Mac, the Scalign icon in the menu bar turns red. From that icon you can also start and stop recordings and record an in-person meeting.
• In Scalign, Settings → Recording → Desktop recorder says "Signed in and ready to record" when everything is set up.

On Windows, keep the app open (minimize it rather than closing it): closing the window quits the app, and it can't detect meetings while it's closed.

Troubleshooting

• "Recording is paused" banner. A permission was turned off. Click Fix it and switch it back on.
• A Zoom meeting wasn't matched to your calendar. On a Mac, quit and reopen Zoom once after installing the app.
• A very short recording disappeared. Recordings under 30 seconds are discarded.
• Audio stopped partway. Changing your microphone or speakers during a recording can interrupt audio capture; pick them before the meeting starts.
